چکیده

We have investigated the temporal variability and statistics of the “instantaneous” Strehl ratio. The observations were carried out with the 3.63-m AEOS telescope equipped with a high-order adaptive optics system. In this paper Strehl ratio is defined as the peak intensity of a single short exposure. We have also studied the behaviour of the phase variance computed on the reconstructed wavefronts. We tested the Maréchal approximation and used it to explain the observed negative skewness of the Strehl ratio distribution. The estimate of the phase variance is shown to fit a three-parameter Gamma 1 Based on data from the Maui Space Surveillance System, which is operated by Detachment 15 of the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory's Directed Energy Directorate. 2 on leave from Center for Adaptive Optics, University of California, Santa Cruz, USA 3 current address Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena CA Report Documentation Page Form Approved OMB No. 0704-0188 Public reporting burden for the collection of information is estimated to average 1 hour per response, including the time for reviewing instructions, searching existing data sources, gathering and maintaining the data needed, and completing and reviewing the collection of information. ABSTRACT We have investigated the temporal variability and statistics of the ?instantaneous? Strehl ratio. The observations were carried out with the 3.63-m AEOS telescope equipped with a high-order adaptive optics system. In this paper Strehl ratio is defined as the peak intensity of a single short exposure. We have also studied the behaviour of the phase variance computed on the reconstructed wavefronts. We tested the Mar?al approximation and used it to explain the observed negative skewness of the Strehl ratio distribution. The estimate of the phase variance is shown to fit a three-parameter Gamma distribution model. We show that simple scaling of the reconstructed wavefronts has a large impact on the shape of the Strehl ratio distribution. 15. The Strehl Ratio in Adaptive Optics Images: Statistics and Estimation

Statistical properties of the intensity in adaptive optics images are usually modeled with a Rician distribution. We study the central point of the image, where this model is inappropriate for high to very high correction levels. The central point is an important problem because it gives the Strehl ratio distribution. We show that the central point distribution can be modeled using a non-centra...

Strehl ratio and visibility in long-baseline stellar interferometry.

The relationship between Strehl ratio (S), the parameter most often used by those in the adaptive optics field, and visibility (V), the parameter of most interest to those working in interferometry, is investigated. It is found that if the atmospheric turbulence is assumed to be Kolmogorov, V approximately S for high Strehl ratios. At low Strehl ratios, both simulations and an analytical formul...

Adaptive optics with four laser guide stars: correction of the cone effect in large telescopes.

We study the performance of an adaptive optics (AO) system with four laser guide stars (LGSs) and a natural guide star (NGS). The residual cone effect with four LGSs is obtained by a numerical simulation. This method allows the adaptive optics system to be extended toward the visible part of the spectrum without tomographic reconstruction of three-dimensional atmospheric perturbations, resolvin...

Improvement in retinal image quality with dynamic correction of the eye's aberrations.

We measured the improvement in retinal image quality provided by correcting the temporal variation in the eye's wave aberration with a closed-loop adaptive optics system. This system samples the eye's wave aberration at rates up to 30 Hz. Correction of the eye's aberrations can be completed in 0.25-0.5 seconds, resulting in residual rms wave-front errors as low as 0.1 microns for 6.8 mm pupils....

Performance of the Keck Observatory adaptive-optics system.

The adaptive-optics (AO) system at the W. M. Keck Observatory is characterized. We calculate the error budget of the Keck AO system operating in natural guide star mode with a near-infrared imaging camera. The measurement noise and bandwidth errors are obtained by modeling the control loops and recording residual centroids. Results of sky performance tests are presented: The AO system is shown ...
